Diary-tech Innovates Step Counter for Cattle
A startup Diary-tech Innovates Step Counter for Cattle in Bangalore-based Stellapps.
A step counter for cows is a device that can be attached to a cow’s leg to count the number of steps the cow takes. This device can be used for a variety of purposes, such as:
Monitoring cow health: A step counter can provide insight into the activity levels of cows, which can be an indicator of their health. If a cow is taking fewer steps than usual, it could be a sign that the cow is unwell or injured.
Managing feed intake: By monitoring a cow’s activity level, farmers can get a better sense of how much feed the cow needs. If a cow is taking fewer steps than usual, it might not need as much food as it normally would.
Improving breeding: By monitoring a cow’s activity level, farmers can get a better sense of when the cow is in heat, which can help with breeding and reproduction.
Increasing productivity: By tracking activity levels, farmers can identify which cows are the most active and productive, and use that information to make breeding and culling decisions.
“We have a device which is like a Fitbit for cattle,” says Ranjith Mukundan, co-founder and CEO of Stellapps. The company’s “mooON” device “goes around the animal’s leg, and [tracks] their activity levels,” he says.

According to Mukundan, cows move more while they are ovulating and less when they are ill. Stellapps is a smartphone app that sends reminders for common procedures like vaccines and artificial insemination using information from the step monitors and data that farmers and veterinarians input. Farmers may enhance yields by tracking and better managing their livestock because healthier cows provide more milk.
Stellapps is the first of its kind startup in India working towards the digitization of the dairy supply chain. Started in the year 2011, we are an IIT Madras incubated, Bangalore based, Internet of Things (IoT) startup with a primary focus on data acquisition and machine learning. Milk is the largest crop on this planet and there is a strong need for technology interventions, especially in the emerging markets where the yield per animal is low, traceability is inadequate and quality is not up to the mark. Digitization of the Agri-Dairy supply chain in the emerging markets is where we help unlock unprecedented value on a very large scale.
Stellapps Components
Stellapps mooON solution has two components : mooOn device & mooOn app. mooOn device is a pedometer for cattle which detects heat and various disorders based on their activities and their resting behaviour. mooOn app is a herd management application which gives recommendations to optimize herd performance.
In India, milk is traditionally delivered by farmers to locations for collecting in neighboring communities. Here, Stellapps measures the nutritional value of the milk using an ultrasonic analyzer, enabling uniform price fixing and providing farmers with updates on the wellbeing and dietary requirements of their cows.
Overall, step counters for cows can be a useful tool for farmers looking to monitor and improve the health and productivity of their herd.
