Google Domains sold to Squarespace in surprise exit from domain registration, on June 15, 2023, Google announced that it had entered into an agreement to sell Google Domains to Squarespace. The deal is expected to close in Q3 2023.  Google Domains is “winding down following a transition period,” with Squarespace taking over the business and assets.

As part of the deal, Squarespace will acquire all of Google Domains’ assets, including its customer base of over 10 million domains. Squarespace will also become the exclusive domains provider for any customer purchasing a domain along with their Google Workspace subscription from Google directly for a minimum of three years.

The sale of Google Domains is a surprise move by Google, as the company had only launched the service in 2014. However, the sale is seen as a way for Google to focus on its core businesses, such as search and advertising.

Squarespace says it will “honor all existing Google Domains customers’ renewal prices for at least 12 months following the closing of the transaction,” which is expected to occur in Q3 2023. As such:

There is no immediate impact on your Google Domains account and there is nothing you need to do at this time. Once regulatory approvals are obtained and the transaction closes, you will become a customer of Squarespace, and your domain will be owned and, after a transition period, managed by Squarespace.
